DECEMBER 2012

Sentences and Convictions

GCN compiles an on-going list of incidents involving guns. In this section are sentences and convictions for court rulings, and the verdicts of inquests, made this month.

We know that our information is incomplete. The number of incidents in our lists is between 10 and 15 percent of the total number of firearms offences recorded in Home Office and Scottish Government figures, though we believe nearly all of the most serious crimes are being included. Your help in collecting more information would be greatly appreciated. If you have any information about an incident please contact us by email contact@gun-control-network.org.

Please see our explanation of why we highlight incidents involving air weapons.

ENGLAND

Liverpool Echo, 11 December 2012

A businessman has been jailed for eight years after a loaded semi-automatic pistol, two bags of ammunition, knives, machetes and knuckle dusters were found at his home during an investigation into suspected loan-shark activities at the property in Great Sankey, Cheshire. He claimed that a plumber had left the firearm and ammunition at the house during a job to fix a leak and the workman had attempted to corroborate this story, but he was nonetheless found guilty.

Yorkshire Evening Post, 2 December 2012

Tahir Mahmood has been given a conditional discharge and ordered to pay 1200 after pleading guilty to having a dangerous article at Leeds Bradford Airport in Yeadon, West Yorkshire. An air pistol was found in his checked luggage as it was being loaded onto a flight and Mahmood was arrested. He claimed the gun was intended for shooting pigeons in Pakistan, where it is not possible to buy airguns.

Express & Star, 1 December 2012

Three brothers have been found guilty of the theft of 3,500 worth of replica army gear from a specialist business in Bilston, West Midlands. Gavin and Lee Cotterill were jailed for 19 and 11 months respectively, and Lee Cotterill was given nine months in a young offenders' institution. The trio were initially found in possession of a BB gun, a stab vest and radios when officers stopped their car, from which an imitation gun and ammunition were later recovered. The remaining stolen items - including 57 replica shotguns and rifles, ammunition, 17 protective vests and two camouflage shirts - were subsequently discovered during searches of their homes.
