were once again several reported incidents involving potentially fatal air guns.
These often consisted of legally owned air weapons being used to terrorise
other individuals or animals. We located and reported 44 shootings or
assaults with either a shotgun, handgun or air gun. This includes all
fatal shootings, hold-ups and animal shootings which police indicated
involved one of those types of gun. In 24 of those incidents (55%), an air
gun was the weapon used, not an illegal handgun or shotgun.
The recorded incidents involving
an air gun included:
Two cases of threats by pointing a gun at
Devon and in
Gwynedd, while another two previous gunmen were jailed -- a
Staffordshire and a 21-year-old in
Wick who threatened to shoot the mother of his child.
Air guns were also used in 18 incidents to
kill and injure animals, resulting in death on eight occasions. These
incidents included four pet cats, a rare peregrine
falcon, a buzzard, and two swans, with one's shooting resulting in the
death of at least three cygnets and eggs. See the bottom section of the
June Incidents for details.
Imitation and BB guns
across the United Kingdom continue to be victimised by realistic imitation
firearms, which are legal and frequently the gun of choice for armed
robbers. The weapons are terrifying to victims who constantly assert they
fear for their life when assaulted by someone with an imitation gun. They
are also commonly used by an attacker to pistol-whip a victim, usually
leaving the person with significant head injuries.
Since these guns are legal, it's
no surprise they appear most often in armed assaults. It also indicates
that in a majority of cases in which the gun is not identified, it's
likely the perpetrator was using an imitation gun.
We located 53 total incidents
this month involving a person assaulting another, including both new
incidents and jail sentences handed down for previous incidents. This
includes all incidents in which fear was a very severe consequence
of the attack but a gun wasn't actually fired. From
those 53, the perpetrator used an imitation gun or an unknown weapon in 36
(68%) of the cases.
