2012 - JUNE REVIEW

See June Incidents or June Decisions for full list.

Gun Deaths - At least six people's lives were taken by firearms in England, Scotland and Wales during June, while another man was critically injured.  One other man died as a result of an apparent suicide.  Click to view Gun Deaths.

The gun homicides took place in Bellingham, West Ealing, Liverpool (one died and one critically injured) and Walsall (two people died in a suspected domestic murder suicide).  The other gun death in June was an apparent suicide of a soldier discovered dead in barracks in Nottingham.

An inquest completed during the month concluded that a man had taken his own life with a shotgun in Middle Lypiatt, Gloucestershire.

A man was jailed for life following the double murder of two men, aged 20 and 29, who were both shot and killed with a shotgun in Suffolk.

Assaults causing Fear and Non-Fatal Injury

Most firearms assaults in England involve guns being used to threaten individuals, usually for the sake of robbery, while the fear of gunfire is also evident when citizens call police to report gun shots.  Guns used to threaten people in the UK are usually identified as an 'imitation gun' (see explanation) or as unidentifiable, since it's difficult to distinguish -- especially for witnesses and victims of gun violence.

The chart below shows data compiled from new incidents and rulings from gun incidents in England, Scotland and Wales reported in British newspapers from June 2011 to June 2012 (data not available for August and December 2011):

As the graph demonstrates, many robberies take place with guns that may not contain bullets -- yet the fear they instill is considerable and undeniable.

Although imitation guns and airguns are legal in Britain, such guns are also responsible for many of the gun injuries, to both humans and animals.  Airguns are used with ruthless frequency to attack animals, including at least three incidents resulting in death and 10 other incidents resulting in eleven animals and birds being injured, including a 30 year old parrot and a horse during June. See Airgun Incidents page for a catalogue of animal attacks and reports of further airgun violence.

In many assaults in Britain that result in severe injury, the armed individual clubs, or 'pistol-whips,' the victim.  These are frequently imitation firearms, but the perpetrator is able to capitalise on the fear of a victim who is facing imminent danger of being shot.  In fact, this traumatic experience is more common in England, Scotland and Wales than non-fatal shootings.

The chart below again shows data compiled from new incidents and rulings from gun incidents reported in British newspapers, this time displaying incidents causing injury:

GCN is committed to gun violence prevention, and we work to pursue that objective through adjustments to the legal system.  Ultimately, legally obtained guns in every country tend to find their way into the wrong hands, whether it's through theft, or simply the wrong people being given a license (see Domestic Violence incidents).

Especially concerning are the use of shotguns (often licensed to unsafe individuals or stolen), air guns (low-powered guns are legal and high-powered ones can be licensed) and realistic imitation guns (legal to possess but not to trade/manufacture). We will compile a month-by-month table to document the number of new incidents involving these weapons, as well as 'unknown' weapons for the reasons listed above.
