A rare bird of prey was shot near Rugby, Warwickshire. The marsh harrier, a protected species with only 360 breeding pairs alive in the UK, had a broken wing believed to be caused by a shotgun blast. The bird underwent surgery on his wing and a broken leg but vets do not think it will be able to return to the wild.

Four men thought to be armed with a shotgun tried to steal a large quantity of scrap metal from Brownhills, Walsall. The men were apparently spotted while scaling the fence of a metal yard after breaking into the site. Police arrested four suspects.

A former United States soldier is on trial for smuggling guns into the UK. The man is alleged to have bought 81 firearms and smuggled them for use in criminal offences. He was stopped in an airport in July 2010 and has begun trial, along with two British men, who both deny conspiracy to import, sell and possess prohibited firearms with intent to endanger life.

Michael Williams was jailed for a minimum of seven years for inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, aggravated burglary and possession of a firearm. Williams shot a man in Streatham, south London after invading his home with two accomplices in October 2010. Williams stole money and attempted to leave after shooting the victim in the leg, but was attacked by the homeowner, who sliced Williams' face with a Samurai sword. Williams was then reportedly found by police as he hobbled from the scene.

Trevor Hayes has been jailed for 15 years after being convicted of eight offences including robbery. Hayes brandished a sawn-off shotgun as he held up a bank, a post office and two motorists in Watlington, Oxfordshire. The incidents took place over three months earlier this year. Hayes reportedly failed in an attempt to torch his stolen van, and police recovered the gun he had used, which contained Hayes' DNA.

A family lost its cat after he was shot by a pellet gun in Iver Heath, Buckinghamshire. Upon finding the animal with pellet wounds near his spine, the family discovered his back legs were paralysed and he had no control of his bladder. After treatment failed vets put the cat down.

A cat was shot by a pellet gun in Wood Enerby, Lincolnshire. The animal was reportedly left with a shattered jaw and had to have a tube fitted into his stomach in order to eat. But he apparently survived the attack thanks to being found and treated promptly after it took place.

Paul Skidmore and Craig Short have been jailed for seven years and four months and six years, respectively. Both were convicted of two counts of robbery, possession of a firearm and laptop theft. Skidmore threatened his uncle with an air rifle while Short held a knife to the man in Hartlepool in May as the pair attempted to steal money and drugs. Skidmore also struck his uncle on the eye with the butt of the gun. They assaulted another man three days later along with a third offender, Robert Beevers, who was sentenced to a 18-month community order for theft of a laptop and possession of cannabis.

An armed man robbed a betting shop in Burton, Staffordshire. The robber, who CCTV show was donning a mask from the film 'Scream', reportedly threatened a staff member, pointing a gun at her and demanding money.

Police arrested a man in Bracknell on suspicion of possessing a firearm and supplying drugs. Officers reportedly recovered a taser gun, Class A drugs and cannabis upon raiding a house.
