A man was arrested and charged with shooting an 11-year-old boy with an air rifle in Hull. The boy needed an hour-long operation after apparently being shot in the leg while playing with friends on a green.

A member of the public found a firearm in a family park in Newcastle. Police didn't say if the weapon, apparently a handgun, contained ammunition. A thief violently assaulted a woman by pistol-whipping her with a handgun in the same park in October 2008.

Mark Cain and Craig Bulger have been jailed for seven years and six months for attempted robbery. Bulger pled guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and Cain was convicted of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and wounding with intent. In March 2010, Cain shot a security guard in the leg outside a Preston store as the victim fled after foiling the robbers' attempts to secure cash from the store. Bulger, meanwhile, was involved in another burglary plan gone awry in Bury in August 2010. Wayne O'Day, a member of that group, was jailed for three years for conspiracy to rob.

Police seized a sawn-off shotgun and ammunition from a home in Edmonton, north London. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and ammunition.

An armed man held a shop assistant at gunpoint in Kettering, Northamptonshire and made off with cash. Police don't know whether the gun was an imitation weapon, but the victim, though terrified, was not physically harmed.

Police believe a man robbed three stores in Edinburgh over a two-week period. In all three incidents, the suspect allegedly threatened staff with a handgun. Police noted that "it cannot be confirmed whether the handgun was genuine," and yet "the threat of its use was a terrifying experience."
