A man from Scarborough, North Yorkshire, has appeared in court charged under the Firearms Act 1968 with possessing three different types of prohibited weapon, namely a self-loading pistol with a barrel less than 12 inches in length, an air pistol adapted for use with a self-contained gas cartridge system and a revolver also with a barrel less than 12 inches in length.

Police are questioning a man after a gunman entered a newsagents in Whalley Range, Manchester. When he was confronted by staff he fired a shot into the ceiling from what is believed to have been a handgun.

A man has been charged in connection with nine offences including burglary, robbery and being in possession of an imitation firearm. The imitation firearm charge is in connection with an attempted robbery in Slough, Berkshire, in December 2010. He is also charged with possession of a section five firearm on the day he was arrested.

A man who was questioned by officers from Merseyside Police's Matrix unit in June after they took away as many as 10 firearms for testing following visits to his firm's offices in Liverpool and home in Heswall will not face further action. The guns were reported to have been antiques.

Police were searching for a gunman after a man was spotted carrying a silver handgun in Exeter, Devon. The man is believed to have gone into a number of shops. Police later confiscated a toy gun from a man who was given "suitable words of advice" (BBC, 15 January 2011).

A gang held three cemetery workers at gunpoint and tied them up while they stole their mini-digger which the gang then used to smash into a cash exchange centre in Handsworth, Birmingham. Police who responded to an alarm were threatened with a pistol. The gang fled the scene but police later recovered a number of cars with thousands of pounds of cash believed to have been stolen. A shotgun and small arms ammunition were also found. Three men and a woman have been charged with armed robbery and kidnap, a fifth man has also been charged with firearms offences (BBC, 8 March 2010). One man has been found guilty of a number of charges, including six of possessing a firearm, and a second man has admitted a charge of robbery (see March 2011 Incidents).

John Bolster has admitting possessing a stun gun. It was found at his home in Haigh, Greater Manchester. He claimed he did not realise that it was a prohibited weapon and that it had been left behind by a friend. He was given a community order with 200 hours unpaid work. The device will be destroyed.
