Ryan Catton, 35, Nathan Godfrey, 30, and Lee Nicholson, 29, have been jailed for their involvement in a firearm transaction in January last year. The trio helped two men from Hemel Hempstead set up a meeting to collect a gun from an armourer living on a residential street in Oldham, Greater Manchester. After surveillance officers witnessed the transaction, armed police stopped the men’s car and recovered loaded a Turkish XR 9mm Pistol and eleven rounds of ammunition. Phone data revealed the defendants’ involvement, despite them ceasing contact with each other after the weapon transfer. Catton and Godfrey were sentenced to thirteen years and fourteen years, respectively, after being convicted of conspiracy to transfer a firearm and ammunition, while Nicholson was jailed for eight years and three months after pleading guilty to the same charge. The three men were also made subject to a Serious Crime Prevention Order, which will ban them from having more than one electronic device for five years on release from custody. The two men who collected the gun are due to be sentenced at a later date.

Leon De Silva, 23, Rached Itani, 21, Yasser Ibrahim, 25 and Lielay Areguy, 30, have all been jailed for their involvement in a targeted shooting Northolt, West London. One evening in March 2019, De Silva and Itani knocked at an address before one of them pointed a shotgun through the letterbox and shot at a man as he approached the door. Fortunately, the man turned sideways and the shot only grazed his chest. De Silva and Itani fled in a previously-stolen car that was later pursued by police officers who noticed it was being driven erratically. When they crashed into bollards, the two men were arrested on suspicion of driving offences before two large hunting knifes were found in the vehicle, with more weapons being subsequently found at their homes. The court heard that the victim had been targeted because he had refused to “give up” the whereabouts of his brother, who had angered two drug lords operating in the area. The four offenders, trusted drug runners for the dealers, were recruited to carry out the assassination attempt, with Areguy carrying out reconnaissance beforehand. Ibrahim was linked to the case when phone and data evidence proved contact with the other defendants and his fingerprints were discovered inside the getaway vehicle. De Silva, Itani, and Ibrahim were all sentenced to 27 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty of conspiracy to murder, with concurrent sentences for other offences, while Areguy was jailed for eighteen years for his lesser role.

After pleading guilty to theft and possession of an imitation firearm while committing an offence, Michael Eric Day, aged 25, has been handed an eighteen-month community order with a requirement to complete up to 30 days of rehabilitation activity and six months of drug rehabilitation. In February this year, Day stole a can of Red Bull from a shop in Bournemouth, Dorset. When he was confronted by a security guard, Day handed him an imitation gun and asked him to put it in a bin. The court heard that Day carried the broken firearm for protection because he had recently been robbed and that it had not been used to threaten or intimidate anyone during the shoplifting incident.
