Banaris Ali has been jailed for two years and nine months after pleading guilty to possessing a disguised weapon and imitation firearm, as well as drink-driving. He was arrested after his neighbour called police to report seeing a man with a gun on their street in Dudley, West Midlands. Ali was not home when officers went to his flat but they found a stun gun made to look like a mobile phone and a small bag of cannabis. He was then seen driving past the building in his car at high speed, and was caught by police after getting stuck in traffic. He was found to be over the legal alcohol limit and to have a gas-operated ball-bearing gun with the appearance of a nine-millimetre semi-automatic pistol in the vehicle. Ali told police that he had taken the gun into the street in order to intimidate some people who were reportedly making him uncomfortable by sitting in a van outside his flat into leaving the area.

A 27-year-old man has been killed after he was shot in a drive-by shooting with an Uzi-style submachine gun in Harlesden, north-west London. After the friend he was with went into a nearby shop to get food, a vehicle drove up and he was shot six times at close range by a person who got out of a vehicle, before the car sped away from the scene. The victim’s friend found him on the floor when he returned and attempted to perform CPR, but he had five bullets in his chest and one in hi thighs and was pronounced dead by police who attended the scene. The victim had been living with a friend after being kicked out of the hostel where he was living and was accused of drunkenly attacking a man and damaging property, but he was not involved in gang activities. Information posted on social media websites in the hours before the shooting indicated that a feud between rival gangs over stolen jewellery was expected to escalate into violence, and the victim’s murder is suspected to be a case of mistaken identity. A 29-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of murder and an 18-year-old man was also arrested on suspicion of robbery in connection with the shooting (BBC News, 12-03-2016).
