A shotgun blast left a gaping hole in the front door of a home in South Norwood, south London. Police investigating a burglary found the damaged door but said there was no break-in following the shooting. Officers arrested a man on suspicion of his involvement with the incident.

Police recovered a shotgun and a large amount of suspected cocaine at a pub in Wiltshire. Officers arrested three men and one woman on suspicion of supplying drugs and owning the firearm.

Police arrested two men on suspicion of possessing a firearm in Sutton, Merseyside. Officers searched a property after a member of the public reported seeing a gun, and they subsequently arrested both men.

Someone shot a cat with an air rifle in Dudley, West Midlands. A pellet was found in the neck of the pet, which had been rescued by her current owner in 2011. Following an operation the cat is expected to make a full recovery, as the pellet apparently missed her larynx by a millimetre -- had it connected, the pellet reportedly would have been fatal.

A man shot and killed three women in Horden, County Durham before turning the gun on himself. The killer used a legally owned shotgun to murder his partner, her sister and his partner's niece. The BBC reports that the killer, who was licensed to own six firearms, had previously had his guns taken away by police in 2008, but his licenses were later restored.

A man was shot while lying in bed at a travellers site in Accrington, Lancashire. The victim was reportedly attacked when a gang of men drove a car onto the compound and fired a shotgun twice through a caravan window, wounding him in the hand but missing his wife. Police have arrested six people on suspicion of attempted murder.

Two armed robbers held up a post office security van in Canvey, Essex. The men reportedly threatened a guard with a shotgun and escaped with cash.

Police arrested a man in Cheltenham and charged him with a series of drugs and firearms offences. He was charged with two counts of possessing a firearm without a certificate as well as possession of ammunition without a certificate, prohibited ammunition and expanding ammunition. He was also charged with four counts of possession of a stun gun, possession of tear gas and possession of drugs. 


East London and West Essex Guardian

Mohammed Ayub Khan has been jailed for at least 26 years after he murdered two men in Chigwell, Essex in 2003. Khan escaped to Pakistan and was extradited in 2010 after being found in Bangladesh. Khan and two other men apparently killed the victims in a row over parking, pulling out a machine gun and firing 10 rounds. Police have not located the other men nor have they recovered the murder weapon.

A 23-year-old student from India was shot and killed in Salford, Manchester. The victim was reportedly approached by two men before being shot in the head at close range. Police said the attack appeared unprovoked and that they were treating it as a hate crime. The perpetrator allegedly used a handgun which has not been recovered. Officers arrested five young men aged 16 to 20 on suspicion of murder (BBC News, 29 December 2011).
