Two security guards were attacked by armed robbers in Tyneside. As the guards loaded a cash machine, two men threatened them with a gun and attacked them with a hammer, stealing money and escaping by car. Both guards were taken to hospital, and one was reportedly left with significant bruising, but both were discharged without serious physical injuries.

Three men carried out an armed robbery at a betting shop in Pontllanfraith. Police said the raiders threatened two members of staff with a shotgun and a knife, before escaping with cash.

Billy Smith has been convicted of inflicting grievous bodily harm and possessing a firearm when prohibited after shooting a man with a shotgun in Greenhithe, Kent. Smith's son, also called Billy, was charged with common assault and will face up to six months behind bars. The elder Smith will be sentenced for a period up to five years.

A group of teenagers shot at a home in Witney, Oxfordshire in an attack apparently fuelled by homophobia. The five boys who targeted the house reportedly shattered the glass patio door with an air gun, shouting homophobic slurs at the male couple who live there.

A man was robbed at gunpoint in Southend, Essex. The victim apparently was followed off the train by four men, who threatened him with a handgun and took money and his phone. The group then punched the victim, leaving him with facial injuries, and escaped.

A man armed with a knife was brought down by taser guns by police inEynesbury, Cambridgeshire. Police said the man was threatening to stab himself, and when negotiations failed they used the stun gun to shock him and take him into custody.

A cat was killed by an air gun in Salisbury, Wiltshire. He was taken to hospital after his owners found him injured, but the subsequent infection caused by the attack left him beyond treatment. Unable to save him, a vet told the Journal that the cat then died in pain.


North Wales Weekly

A cat was shot by an air rifle in Towyn, Wales. A pellet was lodged in her groin, causing her to be unable to use her back legs. The cat underwent surgery to remove the pellet and is recovering following the operation.

A swan was killed when he was shot in the eye by someone with an air gun in Windsor. The body of the swan was found floating in the river by a Swan Lifeline Rescue Centre worker who instantly recognised the bird for his distinct features, but no aid could be administered as the swan had already died.

Andrew Ratcliffe has been jailed for five years for possession of two firearms and cannabis. The former soldier was caught with a sawn-off shotgun with ammunition, a revolver and drugs at his home in Burnley.
