Robert Ward, 46, has been given a 12-month suspended sentence with a requirement that he must undergo supervised medical treatment for “psychotic tendencies” after he pleaded guilty to possessing live ammunition without a licence at his home in Harlow, Essex. Police discovered 71 rounds of illegal ammunition, including eight unfired .22 long rifle calibre lead hollow point expanding cartridges hidden inside a cigarette packet in a jacket pocket and 63 rounds hidden in bags under the staircase. Ward had been a firearms certificate holder in the early 90s and was said to have forgotten to surrender the ammunition when he handed in his gun. He was struggling with paranoid thoughts about being burgled, thoughts of suicide and amphetamine use.

Ashley Latimer-Bassill, Daniel Stanley, and Jamie Kalaiarasu have been jailed for a total of 17 years for threatening taking the manager of a jewellery shop hostage at gunpoint in a robbery in Harpenden, Hertfordshire. Before the planned robbery, Kalaiarasu visited the store a number of times and ordered items under the pretext of an upcoming wedding. On the day of the attack he visited late and left with the victim, leading him to Stanley and Latimer-Bassill who claimed to have a gun, took his keys, phone and alarm fob and bundled him into a vehicle with a hood over his head and ducktaped hands. He was forced to hand over information about how to access the safe, and this was relayed to Kalaiasaru who took £65,000 worth of jewellery from the shop. After being driven around the victim was returned to the store and told to wait ten minutes before moving or he would be shot. He then drove himself to a nearby pub and called the police.

A group of seven men have been jailed for a total of over 40 years for their involvement in running a large-scale drugs rings in Swindon, Wiltshire. They were arrested during a 10-month investigation that completely shut down their operation in which police recovered £250,000 of high-purity cocaine, 120kg of benzocaine cutting agent, three strong-arm presses and an illegal nine-millimetre semi-automatic pistol.

Carl Ansell has been jailed for five years for using an imitation gun to hold up a convenience store in Wolverhampton, West Midlands. He and another unidentified masked man grabbed the shopkeeper and her assistant as they were stacking shelves and marched them to the back of the store before demanding the keys to the safe. The victim told the pair that her husband was currently at the bank with the keys and the money, and they escaped taking cigarettes to the value of £500 as they left, driving off in a rented car with stolen license plates. Ansell was arrested after he was noticed to be sweating excessively by patrol officers and matched to the description of the robbers they had received. He led them to the hidden BB gun and the car containing the cigarettes, and the registration plates were all found nearby. He had been on licence from a previous sentence and on bail after his arrest for assaulting a man at a bar in the city at the time of the robbery.

Luke Slater and Aidan Farr have been jailed for a total of 30 weeks for making an imitation gun look more realistic and taking it on the Tube in Dagenham, east London.

Firearms officers were deployed after reports of teenagers with a gun at the train station in Aylesham, Kent. Police arrested three boys aged 14, 15, and 16 on suspicion of possessing a firearm in a public place and recovered an imitation gun from the station.

A 16-year-old male was witnessed carrying an uncovered air rifle on a street near a primary school in Carlisle, Cumbria. Armed police were sent to the scene where they spoke to the teenager and got him to hand over the weapon without a struggle.

Police have arrested four men suspected of carrying out a series of at least 11 armed robberies on stores and bookmakers in London and Hertfordshire. Officers raided two properties in London and recovered a firearm, clothing and a carnival-style mask believed to have been used in the robberies.

Armed police used a taser to detain a man during a stand-off at a chemists in the centre of Edinburgh. The 32-year-old took staff and customers hostage at the pharmacy when a woman he was with became ill, forcing the owner to lock them inside. Firearms officers eventually stormed the premises and tasered the suspect before was arrested. The woman involved was taken to hospital for treatment for her illness.

A fox cub, a number of crows and a cat have all been shot with an air rifle in the space of a few weeks in Sutton, south London. The fox cub was discovered alive in a garden but had a pellet embedded near its spine restricting its leg movement and it had to be put to sleep. Two of the crows were killed by the shooting, but one survived and has been treated for its injuries. The pet cat was shot in the eye with a pellet.
