An armed robbery took place in Exeter. A man reportedly entered a shop and threatened staff with a handgun, although he fled without taking anything.

David Wood has been jailed for five years after being caught in possession of an imitation revolver in Chatham, Kent. Wood, who had illegally held the weapon since November 2009, received the minimum term for his crime.

A cat was shot with a crossbow bolt in Devon. The steel bolt was embedded in his skull but the cat survived after a lengthy operation.

A teenager was shot and killed in Tulse Hill, south London. The 18-year-old was apparently the victim of a drive-by shooting. Witnesses alerted police that they heard several shots and a speeding car, but the young man died shortly after police arrived.

A mother and her two-year-old daughter were shot and killed in Braintree, Essex. The woman, who was involved in a custody dispute over her daughter with the murder suspect, had reportedly contacted police repeatedly as the man continued to harass her.  Police said the suspect is in hospital being treated for gunshot wounds. Meanwhile, the woman's other daughter, aged 10, managed to escape during the incident and is safe (BBC News, 7 June 2011).

An inquest heard that a murder in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in June 2010 was caused by a single shot in a moment of fatal domestic violence. A woman's ex-boyfriend killed her before taking his own life. The woman, who had sought an injunction for harassment months earlier, left behind a daughter.

Police arrested five men for their suspected involvement in a drug factory discovered in a Liverpool house. A loaded semi-automatic handgun was seized along with cannabis and cocaine.

A man was arrested after a kitten was shot in Hackney, east London. The eight-month old was shot with an air rifle but survived after treatment costing £4,500.

Shahid Farid has been jailed for five years and Simon Day for three years and four months for possessing stolen shotguns. Day, a convicted drug dealer, had been out on jail on licence at the time of the incident in September 2010. He attempted to buy the stolen weapons from Farid when police arrested both in Farid's home in Blackburn, also finding a significant supply of cocaine.


Sunderland Echo

A gunman opened fire on a Sunderland sports club's windows, firing six shots from an air gun before fleeing in a car. Nobody was hurt in the attack, although children were present and nearby. Police managed to trace the car and arrested two 18-year-old males soon after the incident.
